H. JAY DINSHAH was the founder and president of the American Vegan
Society and editor of Ahimsa magazine (1960-2000) and the anthology
Here's Harmlessness. He was the author of Out of the Jungle, Health
Can be Harmless, Song of India, and over 250 magazine articles and
items. In his lifelong career he had variously served as an executive
vice-president of the International Vegetarian Union, vice-president
of The Vegan Society (England), founder and president of the North
American Vegetarian Society (1974-1979); acting executive director
of the American Natural Hygiene Society (1983), first president
of Vegetarian Union of North America.
A lifetime vegetarian - and a vegan since 1957 - he lectured in
nineteen countries on five continents, with on-the-spot interpretation
into a dozen languages.
